JAVEA (or Xabia) is a village in the province of Alicante, situated in a developed sector of the Marina Alta, between the capes San Antonio and La Nao, which covers a total area of 68.3 square kilometres, making it the second largest district in the province of Alicante after Villena. Within its boundaries lies a flat triangular valley bordered by the slopes of the Montgo mountain to the north and the Benitachell mountains to the south.
THE COAST of Javea extends for approximately 25 kms along the coastline and is noted for its variety of landscape and scenery. From the north to the south are the beaches of Pope, Tango, Arenal, Barraca, Falsia and Granadella, alternating between the coves and caves that penetrate into the sides of the cliffs.
JAVEA TOWN is situated at the foot of the Montgo and is noted for the structure of narrow streets and white facades of the buildings, the arched doorways and large gothic windows with balconies and window grilles of forged iron that give it a lordly air. Surrounding the doors, windows and balconies of the houses is the typical Tosca stone taken from the local quarry.
THE MONTGO Situated on the north-west side of the district of Javea, separating it from the neighboring town of Denia, is the Montgo Mountain, which has a maximum height of 751m. The eastern slopes of the mountain descend to 200m, making a horizontal plain of cretaceous limestone that ends at Cap Antonio with a 163m cliff over-looking the sea. The Montgo is also a protected wildlife reserve.
THE BOUNDARIES Javea borders with the district of Denia to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, the Mediterranean and the district of Benitachell to the south and with the districts of Teulada and Denia to the west.
